How do I know this program and diet approach actually work?

Dietflex has been developed and tested in Australia and New Zealand since 2012. All eating plans are based upon fresh foods clients can buy at any local supermarket. We do suggest clients purchase protein powder for between-meal snacks, to maintain satiety.

We always recommend that new coaches go on the program themselves for the first 8 weeks as part of their training, whether they want to lose weight or not.

Does the coach sell products, or is this purely service-based?

The Dietflex weight loss coaching program is mainly service-based. However, it's very helpful (to avoid hunger) if new clients supplement their main meals with between-meal protein shakes to hit their optimal protein target. This is important to help avoid the sarcopenia side effect of many medical weight loss solutions. The goal is to minimise the loss of healthy lean muscle tissue.

The coach has the option of selling recommended protein powder to their clients as part of their service. This can help clients and add extra income for the practice. It's also possible to set up a simple ecommerce site (eg: Shopify) so clients can order online.

If we choose to have a team member trained as a coach, how does the practice get paid — weekly, monthly, or per session?

Here's how the money flows.

the Dietflex program is subscription-based with automatic fee payments by direct debit.

Your clients' fees are automatically deducted from their account each week or each month and the billing company pays this into your bank account, minus a small transaction fee.

This avoids clients paying per coaching session so that the 15 minute weekly coaching sessions do not waste valuable time collecting money.

The practice may also choose to offer a pre-paid program (eg 12, 16 or 20 weeks) as well.

Can we use Dietflex to run a group program?

Yes. You can run a group that meets at the same hour each week, either online, in practice or a combination. It is a lower level of accountability and personalisation compared to one-on-one, but you could set the fees lower. The longer the group goes for the better the outcomes. Although you could run a group for 8 or 12 weeks, 16 weeks would be better.

The other issue to consider with groups is that everyone has to start at the same time. Compare that to one-on-one coaching where each patient can start as soon as they are ready, and the coaching can keep going longer. Some, who have a lot of weight to lose, need and choose to continue coaching for up to a year (52 sessions) or more.

Of course you can do both group and one-on-one.

Is there a cap on how much the practice can earn?

The only cap is the amount of coaching hours you fill and the rate you charge.

Do I have to handle billing or payments, or is that done for me?

When you sign up a new client, we suggest you sign them up to an direct debit agreement into your account with a billing provider of your choice. (We provide a short training program showing you how to set this up. There are no setup fees.)

Then the fee collection is automated for you.

If the coach has existing employment, our standard advice is that they continue it and build the Dietflex business on the side.

What does a typical client journey look like (onboarding, duration, session frequency, telehealth/in-person options)?

There is an initial (free) introductory phone call between the coach and patient.

The next step is a (free) Zoom chat (straight after the call, or booked) to:

1.     Review their weight loss history and goals

2.     Show exactly how the program works

3.     Explain the fee options

If the patient elects to proceed, the next steps are:

1.     A resource pack (Educational booklet, recipe booklet, Daily Planner Phase 1, Shopping List & sample Menu Planner) is mailed to them.

2.     Upon receipt of the resource pack the coach and patient have an extended coaching session (30 to 45 mins) by Zoom to explain how to get started.

3.     They arrange a mutually-suitable day and time for recurring weekly 15 minute check-ins via Zoom.

The weekly 15-minute Zoom or Telehealth check-ins start.

1.     Prior to the session, the patient photographs the previous 7 days food consumption and self-rated wellness to the coach and sends via text to the coach to review.

2.     The coach uses a checklist to review outcomes (eg weight and wellness).

3.     The coach shares recipes and educational handouts.

4.     The coach checks for upcoming challenges (eg social situations)

Every 4 weeks the coach sends a new Daily (food) Planner on the basis:

1.     If they are losing weight they will go to the next phase (25 g > 45 g > 65 g > 85 g)

2.     If they are not losing weight, they’ll stay at the current plan.

The patient also receives automated educational emails every Sunday.

What kind of diet are the people are going on, eg is it low carb, high protein etc.

We actually avoid giving the Dietflex process a name tag as it triggers pre-conceived ideas. 

However, we base our program on the belief “One diet does not work for every body, and people need a flexible but supported process to develop the diet that works for their body.” 

The last 20 years of working with tens of thousands of clients (mainly insulin resistant 40+ females) is that they all vary in their body’s daily carbohydrate tolerance from all foods and drinks, healthy or not. Some can tolerate (dispose of) 100 g carb per day, where others can’t tolerate any more than 60 or even 30 g per day. Exceeding their carb tolerance sends them into hyperinsulinemia which makes weight loss very difficult, and is a risk factor for most chronic diseases. See LINK

Dietflex is a step-by-step process to help each client discover what is their body’s Individual Carbohydrate Tolerance (ICT) and what that means in everyday fresh foods they can get from any supermarket. All clients start at around 25 g carb per day and every 4 weeks we increase carbohydrate-containing options that increase that by 20 g a day, until they stop losing weight.

Eventually they discover their carbohydrate tolerance. Meanwhile they have been losing weight without hunger, or needing to add extra exercise, although we encourage post-meals walks.

It starts with a simple fresh food list and lots of help and resources in meal planning and easy family-friendly recipes.

The program does proactively recommend optimal (more than minimum) protein intake to achieve a satiety effect. With preset food habits this often requires some support and resources from the coach. We also suggest optional between-meal whey protein shakes to optimise protein intake for weight loss.

One of the side effects of many weight loss programs (especially injectables) is sarcopenia (muscle loss). By optimising protein, and encouraging exercise (when they are ready) the Dietflex program seeks to minimise the loss of lean tissue, and avoid metabolic decline, frailty and weight regain.

Are there options for those with dietary intolerances eg gluten free

Yes. There are lots of options so they can avoid any known allergens or intolerances. The most common is gluten and we actually don’t add gluten-containing options until after 12 weeks. We’ve found many are non-celiac but gluten intolerant. We say “Your body is the expert. It will tell you.”

Will clients be getting all their nutrition, vitamins and minerals etc?

In 20 years we have not had one reported case of symptoms of nutrient deficiency. As you can see from the Phase 1 shopping list, they have a broad spectrum of food choices. 

In reality, we believe the program often fixes common deficiencies like protein and heme iron. The program is prescriptive in plant serves in every meal.

The program does not specify vitamin or mineral supplementation, but it does not harm, especially fish oil. It does recommend daily walks in the sunshine (Vit D).

With Dietflex, do patients need any blood tests to do the program?

No. The Dietflex program does not require any blood tests. Central obesity (waist over 50% height) is highly correlated with Insulin Resistance. LINK

Of course the doctor may choose a battery of tests to monitor the patient's health.

Is there any data available on success rates?

Like most weight loss programs and all dietitians we do not publish data, however each coach keeps significant data on each client, that can be reported to the client’s doctor every 4 weeks or as requested.

Of course, the doctor is able to measure outcomes: wellbeing, risk lowering etc..

It is very common to see weight loss, waist loss, energy and mood stabilisation, BP normalisation, lower trigs, increased HDL, lower inflammation markers and for those with gut or bowel issues a reduction in symptoms.

Who provides the coaching?

The practice has two choices:

1. License Dietflex ($495 + $35 pw) and have the coaching delivered by a team member.

2. Refer the patient to an experienced Dietflex coach.

If the practice starts with the referral choice (2), they can switch to the internal choice (1) at any time in the future.

If we choose to have a person trained as a Dietflex coach, what happens if they leave?

You can nominate another person to replace them and get access to the training. There is no extra charge.

How individualised are the plans (family-friendly, budget-aware, cultural needs, allergies/intolerances e.g. histamine intolerance)?

Every plan phase (1, 2, 3 and 4) has a large range of permitted proteins, fats and carbs. Of course, the carb options are very restricted (to greens) in the beginning and increase as they show tolerance.

The patient (whom we call client) makes their choice of ingredients for themselves, their families, their culture, allergies and intolerances.

Can the doctor get reports?

Yes, the coach keeps a weekly record of every weekly check-in. This includes: weight, weight loss, hunger, cravings, sleep, stress, food intake, exercise and stress. The coach also collects weight and waist data every 4 weeks. This data, plus attendance data is available for the doctor.

The clients also keeps daily data: food intake, sleep, stress, energy, successes and challenges.

Of course the doctor can monitor health outcomes. It is not unusual for the doctor to reduce or de-prescribe medicines when metabolic markers improve.

Can the practice set their own fees, or are they fixed?

With Dietflex you decide what are your weekly subscription fees or pre-paid. (We only make suggestions.)

When a coach gets close to filling the coaching time they have available, the practice has a clear choice to either add an extra hour to their coaching schedule to accommodate extra clients, or put up their fees for new clients. This follows the rule of supply and demand.

Does the practice handle billing or payments?

When you sign up a new client, you will sign them up to an Electric Funds Transfer (EFT) agreement into your account with a billing provider of your choice. (We provide a short training program showing you how to set this up. There are no setup fees.)

No. Dietflex operates as a license. You licence the branding, systems, training and support. Your clients pay you directly, though your own billing link (which we help you to set up). Who is behind Dietflex?

Dietflex was created by two of Australia's longest term fitness veterans Jamie and Ellen Hayes. Together they have owned and operated 9 fitness clubs. Jamie was Australia's first national fitness leader of the year, and a successful speaker at fitness conferences.

They noted that the most common goal new exercisers wanted was weight loss. Unfortunately the science is clear that exercise is not an efficient way to lose weight. Weight loss needs effective dietary change.

In 2002 they brought the Healthy Inspirations weight loss center concept from the US to Australia and New Zealand. This has helped over 15,000 women lose over 300,000 pounds.

To stay at the cutting edge of weight loss they teamed with Dr Rod Taylor to create Low Carb Down Under with a Youtube channel of over 500,000 subscribers. It's a non-profit event organisation to bring information to doctors, scientists, health professionals and health-seeking individuals.

Through that association they learnt that people vary in how much carbohydrate they could tolerate without creating hormonal dysregulation that makes weight loss difficult. Together with a Registered Practicing Dietitian they developed an systemised step-by-step weight loss program to help each client discover their body's Individual Carbohydrate Tolerance (ICT).

The philosophy is "One Diet Does Not Suit Every Body."

The ICT program typically takes between 12 weeks and 12 months, not just to lose weight progressively, but to develop sustainable food habits. They recognised that knowing what to do, doing it, and sticking to it are different challenges. This is why they added high frequency (weekly), one-on-one coaching so that clients had a guide who would hold them accountable, support them and share valuable resources and delicious easy recipes. Training & Support

How long does the training take before a team member can start coaching?

The training is self-paced but can be completed within 3 weeks.

Coaching obviously depends on having clients to coach. In a medical practice this can come from doctor referral or brochures in the waiting room.

We encourage coaches to "pre-announce" their new Dietflex coaching business when they start their training with the intention of getting interest.

What kind of ongoing training is provided (nutrition updates, coaching skills, business growth)?

We continue to develop the program and resources, and these updates are communicated to all coaches.

There's also sharing of coaching skills to help coaches help their clients achieve the best outcomes.

All coaches get access to bonus coaching portals with pre-recorded demos of experienced coaches setting up new clients and coaching them.

Business growth is a factor of effective marketing, sales and client retention. We are constantly exploring and testing new ways for coaches to create sales opportunities to acquire more clients.

Is there mentorship or a community of other coaches to connect with?

New coaches are enrolled in the free 6-week Fast-start mentoring program where they have a one-on-one support session each week to help launch their business.

All coaches are invited into our private coaches Facebook group where they can ask questions and share successes.

Coaches can also call for help anytime via email and book a one-on-one Zoom.

New coaches can also sign up as a client of an experienced coach to speed up their learning, and get a better understanding of how the coaching works. If they want to lose some weight, that will be a bonus.

Does the team member need any special skills or experience to be a successful coach?

Yes. The coach needs to be teachable and able to follow simple systems. If they don't know how to use Zoom on a computer, they will need to learn. They need to have good communication skills for the target market (mainly women 40 to 70, but some men as well). They do not need any certification or qualification. We provide all the training.

Dietflex is an expert program that does not need the coach to have specific expertise. The coach simply sets people up on the program, guides them through it and have weekly 15 minute accountability and support sessions.
Most coaches take advantage of their work and life experience in building their coaching business and helping clients succeed.

Lifestyle & Flexibility

Can we choose how many clients we take on?

Yes. At the beginning we encourage each coach to decide what will be their chosen coaching hours each week, starting with 2-3 hours.

With the Dietflex system of 15 min weekly check-ins you can coach 4 clients per hour. So, if the coach has 3 hours available, they can coach 12 clients.

Does the coach have to work evenings or weekends, or can they set their own hours?

They can set your own hours. The only thing to bear in mind is to have clients on recurring weekly check-ins with you at the same day and time each week.

As an example, the coach may set aside the same 3 hours every Tuesday from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, knowing that they will be able to coach 12 clients in those 3 hours.

How much time does the coach need to commit each week? Will this fit around their family or part-time work?

Initially, the coach will have to commit time for doing the coach training course, as well as the sales and marketing courses. Then, they set their coaching times.

Then, the coach will have to find 2 to 4 uninterrupted hours that you have free each week, whether they are daytime, night time or weekend hours. These hours need to be the same each week and may need family or employer support.

Some coaches are happy with just 2 hours a week, and some build up to 15 hours a week. In addition to coaching time, it's important to allocate time each week to marketing and promotion.

Technology & Business Building Tools

Does the coach need a computer?

Yes. Any recent computer (PC or Mac) that has a webcam will be fine.

Do we need to buy software or apps to run the program?

No. Coaches can operate on a free Zoom account, any email address and any calendar program that comes with your computer.

For sales, coaches use a Powerpoint presentation we provide that can be operated with Microsoft Office, Apple Keynote or free Google Slides software.

Do we need to create a website?

There is no need to create a website, so you save heaps on website development. We list you on our Dietflex page, and recommend you set up a free Google My Business page, so people can find you. Our most successful Dietflex coach does not have a website.

How much tech know-how does the coach need?

They will have to become familiar with using Zoom web chat for video check-ins. It is very simple to learn.

Clients will also send you photos via SMS and email.

Is all coaching done via Zoom, or can it be done by phone and Telehealth too?

Our first preference is Zoom or Telehealth for a high level of accountability, but coaching can be done by phone.

Client Acquisition - How does the coach get clients?

How does the coach find clients?

In a medical practice most clients will come from doctor-referral, waiting room brochure or sign.

Dietflex is a low cost licensed business opportunity where each coach is responsible for their own marketing.

However, the coach does not have to create marketing as we provide marketing resources. It's up to the coach to choose from those marketing resources and implement their marketing.

Marketing can be either referral, database, local or online.

Coaches get access to the short Marketing course and a large range of Marketing Resources.

We recommend each practice set up a free Google My Business page to make their weight loss business easier to find by locals searching for a weight loss solution. We provide advice on how to do that.

Does the coach have to be at their goal weight or have my own transformation story to be a successful coach?

No and No.

Many coaches do the program whilst they are learning and continue thereafter. We encourage coaches to be transparent with their clients "I'm doing the program myself".

The coach does NOT have to be a skinny social media influencer. They DO have to market the business (with our help) and stick to our simple coaching service systems.
If the coach is at their goal weight (whether they've lost weight or not) they can be a successful coach, helping clients succeed. Clients don't want judgement. They want empathy and need accountability.

What if this isn’t a good fit for me or my practice — can I stop easily?

Yes.

You can cancel your license at any time by giving Dietflex 30 days written notice.

We do recommend you give any new business at least a year of effort before you decide if it's a good fit for you.

Is there a refund or cancellation policy for the license fee?

No.

The setup fee covers your access to the training program and our support and is not refundable in full or part.

The monthly fee can be cancelled at anytime with 30 days notice.

What about data privacy — do I need to worry about protecting client health information?

We are all responsible to protect client information.

Any information collected by Dietflex is maintained on a secure server, with strictly limited access.

Coaches may not share or publicise client information without the prior permission having been obtained.

How much upfront investment is required? Are there hidden fees?

The setup fee is disclosed on the enrolment form at the bottom of this page. Then there is the monthly license fee that commences 30 days later. It typically takes the fees of just one client to cover the license fees.

There is a small additional cost. As Dietflex is a hybrid program, you send pre-printed booklets to your clients at the start and then every month. You purchase these booklets from Dietflex. The new client pack typically costs $20 and the monthly planners typically cost $10. This is subject to change. So, it's good to expect that your client costs will be less than 10% of the fees you receive.

Marketing and promotion is another cost to consider. Everybody's circumstances are different. Some have access to a contact list or followers. We teach coaches to use free marketing methods as much as possible to hit their client number goals. Some coaches also use paid advertising (eg Facebook ads) where they have complete control of their marketing costs. We help you set up your marketing.

Coaches typically have their clients on direct debit (Electronic Funds Transfer) using a local billing company. Like credit card companies they charge a small transaction fee.

With any new business we encourage you to give it a good try for at least 12 months. However you can cancel your license anytime after giving 30 days written notice. The setup and training fee is not refundable.

Will I get the support I need, or am I on my own after I join?

Included in the setup fee is a 6 week fast track one-on-one support program where the coach can have pre-scheduled Zoom support. Then the coach can book a support call anytime. Plus, we have a coaches Facebook group where coaches can ask questions. Plus the coach can email support at any time, allowing 24 business hours for replies.
